Notes
At last! It's Basil Kirchin's absolutely lovely soundtrack for the cult camp horror movie from 1971 starring Vincent Price, The Abominable Dr. Phibes.
The soundtrack to The Abominable Dr. Phibes is, unfortunately, not too fondly remembered by the composer. He fell victim to what he describes as a power struggle - "political in-fighting between the producer, the director and the man with the money" - which resulted in a bit of a row and the majority of Kirchin's beautiful music being discarded for the final cut of the movie.
This CD brings together various elements (original masters of music that was used in the movie, music from the original LP and dubs from the actual movie) to present the best available version of the actual music from the final cut of the movie's soundtrack. Unfortunately it does not contain John Gales' replacement theme for Vulnavia as this music is sadly lost forever. A varied arrangement of this theme can be found on the Dr Phibes Rises Again CD.
Also - as a special treat - we get 12 minute suite of Kirchin's unused music along with 3 short peices of "source music" (one actually written by Kirchin). This "source music" was used in the movie, but was not written specifically for it.
