Notes
"Everyone gets everything he wants. I wanted a mission, and for my sins, they gave me one. Brought it up to me like room service. It was a real choice mission, and when it was over, I never wanted another."
This is the Apocalypse Now soundtrack "Definitive Version" - complete with dialogue, narration and sound effects spread across two CDs.
It's actually quite a cool idea - what we get is 90 minutes of audio from the movie in chronological order with music, dialogue, sound effects and Martin Sheen's Captain Willard narration. It's just like listening to an abridged version of the movie and we soon found ourselves getting sucked into the whole atmosphere and story all over again!
Please note - there is no actual 'clean' peices of music on these CDs - they literally contain the music, dialogue and sound effects as heard in the movie. There's a lot of dialogue, so if it's just the music you're after then we recommend taking a look at the Apocalypse Now Redux soundtrack.
The incidental music used in the Apocalypse Now soundtrack was composed by Carmine Coppola with the help of his son, Francis. The music was performed by Shirley Walker using Moogs, Arps and other synths and then manipulated by other renowned electronic musicians such as Nyle Steiner, Patrick Gleason, Bernard L. Krause and Don Preston. The music was then shaped into quadraphonic sound - Apocalypse Now (the original version) was the first movie to use the Dolby 5.1 format (known then as "Dolby Split-Surround Sound") developed by Walter Murch.
