Notes
Der-ner-ner-ner ner. Der-ner-ner-ner ner. Der-ner-ner-ner ner. Der-ner-ner-ner ner. (that's us singing the main theme from Assault on Precinct 13).
This is the first official CD and LP re-release of the classic electronic score from John Carpenter to his cult (and brilliant!) movie Assault on Precinct 13.
Upon initial release in the US, Assault on Precinct 13 bombed without a trace. It was only when it was shown in the UK as part of the 1976 London Film festival did it find an audience and worldwide critical acclaim.
Drawing on composer Bernard Hermann's ability to achieve maximum impact from minimal means - Carpenter decided himself to compose the soundtrack to this, his first major movie, out of necessity due to the ultra-low budget he was working with ($100,000).
What he created was the perfect minimalist soundtrack - and one which contemporary composers admire due to its early use of synthesisers. There's no denying that it's a great score. The main theme is a classic and the track "Precinct 9 - Division 13" has the perfect calm-before-the-storm qualities which just sends shivers up the spine whenever we hear it.
The melody was used by Afrika Bambaataa for his 1986 tune Bambaataa's Theme and also for an old-skool dance tune called Hard Up by Awesome 3. Nice.
