Written and directed by surfer John Millius, the movie is a reflection of his (and co-writer Danny Aaberg's) misspent youth during the turbulent 1960s and tells the tale of three friends that spend their life surfing, partying and drifting in and out of relationships with women. Their carefree existence on the beach is tested by Vietnam and the responsibilities of adulthood; in the final sequence, the friends reunite for "Big Wednesday" itself, a once-a-generation convergence of wind and waves that provides their final challenge as surfers and as men.

Originally (and hardly surprisingly), the studio producing Big Wednesday wanted the soundtrack to feature surf-pop tunes. The Beach Boys offered their services but Millius wasn't too much of a fan of their music so instead approached Basil Poledouris to compose a symphonic score to give the movie a timelessness to suit its aim at mythic and universal themes.

Although Millius got his way in the form of a fantastic score from Poledouris, Big Wednesday does however include a string of period pop songs that were mainly used in the movie's 1962 party sequence (these tunes are not included on this CD).

This premiere CD features the complete Big Wednesday underscore remixed from the original stereo multitracks, with a bonus section of alternate and source music.
