Notes
Candyman (1990) was based on Clive Barkers short story "The Forbidden" (which was based on a Liverpudlian urban legend) from the book "In the Flesh". The movie is about a student (Helen, played by Virginia Madsen) working on a thesis about urban myths that brings to her attention a mythical figure named Candyman (Tony Todd), reputed to be a vicious supernatural killer with a hook for a hand.
Philip Glass (who also scored "Koyaanisqatsi", "Mishima" and "Hamburger Hill" amongst others) was asked by director Bernard Rose to compose a score for his film "Candyman". Glass accepted and wrote a "gothic" score for chorus and pipe organ. Somewhere down the line the film's producers and Clive Barker (Executive Producer) became dissatisfied with the directors work and relieved him of the job of finishing the film. The final version of the film was a disappointment to Glass. He felt that he had been manipulated. What was presented to him as a low budget independent project with creative integrity became (in his opinion) a low budget Hollywood slasher flick.
The recordings found on this CD are the original score recordings for the films "Candyman" and the sequel, "Candyman II: Farewell to the Flesh". The cues have been remixed to better suit home stereo playback. The score for "Candyman II: Farewell to the Flesh" was built from the original "Candyman" cues plus the extra music represented on this disk.
We consider Candyman a minor classic and it's long been a favourite of ours since seeing it at the cinema on it's initial release. Hearing the opening music for the first time we knew we were in for something special. Philip Glass has done an amazing job on this score embuing it with equal doses of mystery, grand-horror, the supernatural, revenge and a definite element of sadness and perhaps sympathy for The Candyman.
If you're feeling really brave, why look into the reflective surface of the CD and say Candyman, Candyman, Candyman, Candyman, Candyman.....
