Notes
The classic disco/funk/R&B soundtrack to the 1976 movie Car Wash - the cult comedy about a "day-in-the-life" of an LA car wash.
From the outset, the producers wanted Car Wash to have a great soundtrack to "drive the movie" and they knew that legendary Motown producer Norman Whitfield was the man for the job.
Whitfield composed the songs whilst the script was being written and recorded them before the movie had even been shot. This meant that the songs were actually played whilst scenes were filmed, resulting in a better syncing of actors movements and the music.
For the Car Wash soundtrack, instead of utilising the talents of existing groups, Whitfield put together a group to record his music. The group, which he named Rose Royce, didn;t exist until he put them together for the the Car Wash soundtrack.
The Car Wash soundtrack was released about eight weeks in advance of the movie, and the first single (the classic disco hit "Car Wash" main theme) becoame the number 1 sobng on the Billboard charts the same week the movie opened. A second single (I Want To Get Next To You) made it to the top 10 on the Billboard national pop singles charts and the original Car Wash soundtrack LP was certified Gold - becoming one of MCA Records most successful soundtrack albums of its time.
