Notes
"Stupid Boy".
This great CD brings together a selection of original 1930s and 1940s wartime songs (as well as rare incidental music) that was used in the hit BBC TV comedy series Dad's Army. The songs usually played for about 10 seconds in-between each scene. It also contains the classic Dad's Army theme tune "Who Do You Think You Are Kidding, Mr Hitler?" which was actually written for the show by show co-creator Jimmy Perry and recorded in 1968 by music hall legend Bud Flanagan. And there we were thinking it was an original wartime song! Doh!
For those of you that haven't heard of Dad's Army, here's the background;
Dad's Army was a BBC TV comedy series that ran for over 80 episodes (9 series) between 1968 and 1977, as well as spawning a feature film, a radio series and a West End musical. Set during the Second World War, Dad's Army centered around the adventures of a group of men who, prevented by age or other disability from enlisting in the services, enrolled as Local Defence Volunteers (LDV), forming part of Britain's 'last line of defence', a strand of the Armed Services which became known as 'Dad's Army'.
Written by Jimmy Perry and David Croft, Dad's Army would establish Captain Mainwaring, Segeant Wilson, Corporal Jones and Privates Pike, Godfrey, Walker and Frazer as comedy legends, and spawn half a dozen deathless catchphrases such as "Don't panic!", "Stupid boy." and Wilson's effete dispensing of military orders, such as 'Would you mind awfully falling into three lovely lines?'.
