For the macabre story about the curse of the evil Red Queen who returns every hundred years to kill seven times, Nicolai has again written a classic motif that it first introduced in vocal form by a little girl singer and then reprised throughout the score using guitar, harpsichord and even in a pop vein by the entire orchestra.

The bloody murders are accompanied by atonal passages and also use fast rhythmic and dramatic pieces.
