Charting the music from the very first episode, Doctor Who at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop Vol. 1 takes us through to 1969 when the Doctor was banished to Earth by the Time Lords.

For the creative folk at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop that produced these sounds, there were no synthesisers, no computers and no samplers for them to use. Instead they used oscillators, crude filters, aged tape recorders and microphones, razor blades and miles of recording tape together with anything they could lay their hands on to produce the raw, unprocessed noises; old piano frames, metal lamp shades, burst copper hot water cylinders, empty bottles combined with heaps of imagination and hard work.

Along with the sound effects and ambient nosies, the BBC also used music from sound libraries in Doctor Who.
