Producer Emiliano Piedra hired Lalo Schifrin to compose the soundtrack as Schifrin had already worked together on Piedra's 1987 production Berlin Blues. For Don Quixote, Schifrin wrote an epic score, with a definite Spanish style clearly influenced by classical maetros such as Joaquin Turina and was left completely free to compose the music. However, problems arose when the director Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón made changes; he dropped some music from the film, switched cues around and - in short - he butchered the score to the point where the music's impact was dramatically reduced.

This CD represents Schifrin's compositions exactly as they had been intended - and as they should have been heard in the film.
