Notes
Behind a scandalous
Aslan-signed sleeve lies
one of the strangest reflections
of the sexual
revolution that was taking
place in France in the 60s
and 70s. An excessively
kitsch musical UFO, furiously
pop and totally
cult, that has long been
whipping the planet's
most perverse record collectors
into a frenzy. At
the origin of this dangerously
shapely sexual
manifesto we find a multitalented
true believer, the
incredible Philippe Nicaud.
Of a theatrical
background and young
rising talent of 50s, 60s
and 70s French cinema.
Alongside his colourful
cinematic career, this
self-confirmed erotomanic
started to make a
name for himself in the
chicly bawdy musical domain.
Two records would
be released under his
name in 1961: "7+1 péchés
capiteaux" and
"Chansons cu... rieuses".
On it, Nicaud sings Bernard
Dimey's 'roses' texts
over music by Charles
Aznavour played by
Jacques Loussier. Our
man knows how to keep
good company, and
though the fundamentals
of his style are already in
place, it will take the free
spirit of 1968 for him to
explode onto the scene,
freed from the chains that
had bound the world of
erotic music.
With Erotico... Nicaud
he plunges hungrily into
the era's melting pot of
pop with the help of
Gérard Gustin and his
pulsingly crafted orchestrations.
As the bass purrs
and the guitars buzz, his
voice becomes more
sleazy, commanding, succeeding
in transforming
him into a modern erotic
dandy. The result is
breathtaking. A veritable
liberated and cheeky masterpiece,
playing maliciously
with good manners
and cheerfully mixing
blatant pick ups with deviant
pop (the fabulous
Cover Girl), dialogues
(peau de bête) and vintage
bossa nova (the
hilarious 'Séparation), salacious obsessions and
poring jerk (Bonne Nuit...
Chuck) and the fevered
Cuisses Nues... Bottes de
Cuir). His unstoppable
insatiably predatory
flow gives birth to a gallery
of borderline characters
(Second-zone Pin-up,
solitary ventriloquist, pentup
sex maniac.) racked by
the throws of desire. Under
his false airs of a
street-side Gainsbourg
hides an incredible observer
and an author of
painstakingly crafted texts
that not once slip into the
murky realms of the
bawdy or bad taste.
A disciple of joyfully uninhibited
erotomania, Philippe
Nicaud has succeeded
in creating a record
that is excessive,
turgescent and incredibly
likeable. One of the best
kept secret treasures of
the pop era finally gaining
momentum to tell us its
stories where "There's no
such thing as untouchable
women, just over -
impatient men!
Produced from the original master
tapes.
