Notes
Morricone's soundtrack to John Boorman's 1977 Exorcist sequel, Exorcist 2: The Heretic.Morricone had a tough act to follow - Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells had contributed greatly to the incredible success of the original Exorcist movie. Morricone also had to combine three elements for the sequel: the tribalism of the African rituals, the standard musical staples of the horror movie and a dreamlike weightlessness linked to redemption and the triumph of good over evil.
Thankfully he created a great score - with some trademark Morricone themes - very much in the vein of his earlier work. The lovely Regan's Theme is reminicent of his late 60's style and Magic And Ecstasy is a killer psychedelic rock track. Interrupted Melody has shades of his theme for Once Upon a Time in America - a soundtrack he'd go on to compose in 1984. The Exorcist 2 soundtrack can be considered as a key piece in Morricone's works - an important crossroads where his previous work meets his future constructions.
Exorcist 2: The Heretic sees Linda Blair reprising her role as Regan. Richard Burton starred as Father Lamont, sent by his Cardinal to discover the death of Father Merrin and to also to see why Regan was possessed by the demon Pasuzu.
On opening in 1977, Exorcist 2 was savaged by the critics and the moviegoing public who wanted more of what they'd experienced in the first movie.
F*ck's sake! Magic And Ecstasy really is a killer track. Play loud for maximum effect!
