Notes
The Grammy award winning soundtrack from folk-rock duo Simon and Garfunkel and soundtrack composer David Grusin to The Graduate - the classic 1967 movie starring Dustin Hoffman, Anne Bancroft and Katharine Ross.
Directed by Mike Nichols from a screenplay by Calder Willingham and Buck Henry, The Graduate is based on the novel of the same name by Charles Webb.
Four of the five Simon & Garfunkel songs that comprise much of The Graduate soundtrack actually appeared on two of the duo's earlier LPs: "The Sound Of Silence" & "April Come She Will" are taken from "Sounds of Silence" (Jan. 1966) and "Scarborough Fair/Canticle" & "The Big Bright Green Pleasure Machine" are taken from "Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme" (Sept. 1966). Nichols use of pre-existing pop hits as part of a soundtrack (he was a fan of S&G) ushered in a new era in soundtrack marketing that grew exponentially in the subsequent years.
On the strength of the hit single "Mrs. Robinson" (which wasn't even originally written for the movie - its original title being "Mrs. Roosvelt"), The Graduate soundtrack rose to the top of the charts in 1968 knocking off The Beatles' White Album. Interestingly enough, The Graduate soundtrack doesn't actually contain the full version of "Mrs. Robinson" (the song was not actually completed for the film; only snippets are heard as incidental music). The full version of "Mrs. Robinson" can be found on the Simon & Garfunkel LP 'Bookends' (March 1968). At the March 1969 Grammy Awards, "Mrs. Robinson" was named Record of the Year.
