Notes
The chilling soundtrack to John Carpenter's seminal stalk-and-slash movie starring Jamie Lee Curtis, Donald Pleasance, P.J. Soles and Nick Castle as Michael Myers (AKA "The Shape").
Like a lot of his early movies, Carpenter decided to score this one himself; "I was the quickest and cheapest I could get". Before Halloween's release, Carpenter showed a cut of the movie - minus sound effects and music - to a 20th Century Fox producer whilst interviewing for a possible directing job. The producer wasn't scared at all. It was at this point that he became determined to "save it with the music".
What he created (with the help of Dan Wyman, who had programmed the synths on the Assault on Precinct 13 score) was a classic, minimal electronic score that had no small part in making the movie the success it was in 1978 and the cult hit it is today.
This is seriously one of our favourite 'mainstream' horror soundtracks. It's bloody perfect.
If you've already got this or fancy something a little different then check out the 20th Anniversary Special Edition which contains dialogue and sound effects from the movie.
