Notes
The much sought-after soundtrack to the cult movie Head starring The Monkees.
Head was The Monkees' 6th album and the soundtrack to their only movie. When Head was made, the Monkees' career was in decline - their TV show had been cancelled and their music was no longer charting (The track Porpoise Song from this soundtrack only got to number 62 on the US Billboard charts).
There's been much debate about the screenwriting credits for Head, but one thing is certain - it certainly had input from the four guys (Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones, Mike Nesmith & Peter Tork) who met with producers Bert Schneider, Bob Rafelson and Jack Nicholson before the script was written. They all agreed that they wanted to do something different to the Monkees TV show. The result was (depending on who you talk to) either a calculated attempt at making the Monkees counterculturally acceptable, or a trippy set of non-linear and surreal sketches on the subject of manufactured fame.
The original soundtrack LP (released on December 1st 1968 and charting for 15 weeks with a peak at #45) featured 6 songs cut into sequences of dialogue and sounds assembled by Jack Nicholson.
We know as much about The Monkees as most people (watched the TV show as kids, know their famous hits), and after a few spins of this disc the tunes really started to grow on us - they've got a totally groovy/pop 60's vibe and we're lovin' 'em! Good stuff guys!
This CD contains the original LP plus four bonus tracks.
