Notes
The premier release of Frank De Vol's Oscar nominated soundtrack to Robert Aldrich's classic "hag horror" movie from 1964, Hush... Hush, Sweet Charlotte starring Bette Davis and Olivia de Havilland.
For the Hush... Hush, Sweet Charlotte soundtrack, Frank De Vol anchors the involved score with a warm main theme, setting the trend for scary movies with lullaby themes playing before the shrieks appear. In addition to the orchestra, De Vol creates complex sequences with layers of then-state of the art electronics within the orchestra plus a ghostly female chorus. Harpsichord and piano are also added for further spooky elements. Central to story is the haunting theme song by De Vol with lyrics by Mack David.
Producer/director Robert Aldrich who had helmed the first and most influential "hag horror" film of them all, "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?" (starring Bette Davis and Joan Crawford) wanted to repeat its box office success so he he re-teamed Davis and Crawford but, Crawford became ill, checked into hospital and wouldn't come out. Olivia de Havilland stepped in to take the role.
Hush... Hush, Sweet Charlotte garnered numerous Academy Award nominations including two for composer Frank De Vol (Best Original Score, Best Song).
This CD contains 70 minutes of music in stereo from the original scoring session masters. As is typical for aged 35mm magnetic elements, some deterioration is evident, but even with the occasional deterioration, the stereo presentation affords a rewarding premiere of this 60s spooky masterpiece!
