Notes
The seductive and evocative jazz-fusion-orchestral soundtrack to Bernardo Bertolucci's notorious 70's erotic drama.Last Tango in Paris (AKA Ultimo Tango A Parigi) is the story of Paul (Marlon Brando), a mysterious American expatriate living in Paris, and the intense, anonymous and domineering psychosexual relationship he begins with Jeanne (played by the beautiful Maria Schneider), the young borgeoisie woman he meets in a vacant rental apartment.
Argentinian jazz-fusion composer/performer Gato Barbieri (real name Leandro Jose Barbieri) had worked with Bertolucci before when he was asked to contribute his Saxophone playing to the Gino Paoli songs that accompanied Ennio Morricone's score for the director's 1964 film Before the Revolution.
In 1973 a soundtrack LP for Last Tango was released that comprised of 11 tracks of music that expanded on Barbieri's often fragmented cues from the movie. In 1998 he revisted the soundtrack for an expanded CD release and assembled 29 of the film's original, albeit brief cues into a 27 minute suite. This CD contains the 11 tracks from the original 1973 LP release along with the 27 minute suite (the actual cues from the movie) Barbieri compiled in 1998.
The actual soundtrack earned Barbieri a Grammy nomination for Best Original Score Written for a Motion Picture and for the main theme, he won a Grammy for Best Instrumental Composition.
Please don't get butter on this CD - it'll ruin it.
