Notes
The grand and propulsive soundtrack to the classic western The Magnificent Seven starring Yul Brynner, Eli Wallach, Steve McQueen, Horst Buchholz, Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn, Brad Dexter and James Coburn.
The Magnificent Seven was based on Akira Kurosawa's 1954 masterpeice, The Seven Samurai. Yul Brynner was a big fan of Kurosawa's movie and seeing the potential for a remake wanted to secure the rights, only to be beaten to it by Hollywood producer Lou Morheim (who legend has it bought them for $250!).
Elmer Bernstein, a relative newcomer, was brought in by director John Sturges to score the movie after hearing his score for The Ten Commandments. Executive Producer Walter Mirisch says of Bernstein's contribution "whether it's The Bridge on the River Kwai of Doctor Zhivago, Jaws or The Great Escape, music is such an integral part of those films that you can no longer seperate the music from the picture. If you were to look at The Magnificent Seven without the music, you would be jarred because the mold would be broken.".
In the 1960s, the main theme from The Magnificent Seven was used as background music for Marlboro TV commercials.
