Notes
A selection of Christian Bruhn's music from the popular early 80s German TV show Manni, Der Libero - a 13 episode children's drama about the trials and tribulations of a young football (soccer) mad boy who finally makes it into the national youth team.
Manni, Der Libero proved to be a real blockbuster and the series became a classic of German kids television.
The Manni, Der Libero soundtrack, written by composer Christian Bruhn, is one of the highlights of the series. While the Timm Thaler soundtrack is rather melancholic and full of prog-rock-keyboards a la Pink Floyd, rock-guitars and vocal songs dominate the Manni der Libero soundtrack. The catchy title song with its "Manni der Libero" shouts is regarded as a classic and it's easy to tell that Bruhn had only just finished composing the Captain Future soundtrack before working on Manni der Libero: the tracks "Manni als Detektiv", "Berlin!", or "Ein Spiel geht verloren" sound as if they've been lifted straight from the soundtrack of the cartoon classic.
Christian Bruhn is one of the most successful composers in Germany. He has not only composed many successful hits, but also literally ruled the kids TV show soundtrack-market of 70s and 80s with the music from Captain Future, Alice in Wonderland, and Wickie und die starken Männer, but also Christmas specials like Silas, Jack Holborn, Patrick Pacard, and Oliver Maass.
When recording the soundtrack, the recording studio was filled with leading musicians of the Munich Sound. Christian Bruhn played the keyboard and was accompanied by Kristian Schultze (Keyboard), Curt Cress (Drums), Günther Gebauer (Bass) and Geoff Bastow and Mats Björklund (Guitars).
