After a string of wildly popular scores for fantasy & adventure movies (Jaws, Star Wars, Superman, Raiders Of The Lost Ark and E.T.) John Williams got the opportunity to offer some serious, involved work with the Monsignor soundtrack.

Important landmarks include an expressive solo trumpet theme plus dense, somber string writing that foreshadows his later JFK, Nixon and Munich soundtracks. A magnificent highlight is a powerful "Gloria" for full orchestra plus massive choir with organ! Space opera fans will be happy that Williams also manages a nod to his signature style with the rousing "Meeting in Sicily", replete with allegro woodwinds, soaring French horns and resplendent brass fanfares.

For this release of the Monsignor soundtrack, the master elements from the original 1982 LP have been used (almost the complete score omitting only 3 minutes of music and adding 10 minutes of music not used in movie). Gorgeous stuff.
