Notes
(Blood splattered) hats off to the guys at DigitMovies again for their unearthing of this previously unreleased soundtrack to Francesco Barilli's cult noir/horror movie from 1978 Pensione Paura (AKA Hotel Fear).
This is wonderful stuff from talented Spanish composer Adolfo Waitzman who loved the experimentation of new sounds alongside the usual orchestral techniques.
For the Pensione Paura soundtrack, Waitzman divides the main theme into two parts; first a rhythmical Progressive Music styled theme for piano, drums, electric guitars and organ and then a very sad lyrical motiv for piano and strings and is reprised in the soundtrack to give sense of mystery and despair. The 'terror' side of the score is respresented by a variety of atonal pieces and the Waitzman's Argentinian roots are clear from the use of tango tunes that pop up twice throughout the music.
Bloody good stuff.
