Notes
Woo-hoo! It's the world premiere release of the original soundtrack to Stanley Donen's sci-fi thriller starring Kirk Douglas, Farrah Fawcett, Harvey Keitel and Hector the robot.
With the Saturn 3 soundtrack, Bernstein offers perhaps the most complex score in his distinguished career with massive brass, divisi strings, an array of woodwinds, piano, xylophone, harp, solo soprano, male chorus plus an unusually large percussion section featuring in the orchestra.
The Saturn 3 soundtrack opens and closes in an epic manner with dynamic brass fanfares. Inbetween are mysterioso cues, virtuoso action sequences. Interestingly, much of Bernstein's music was deleted from the final cut of the movie including the haunting music for "Alex" (Farrah Fawcett) that ultimately became the wildly popular "Taarna" theme for the composer's later soundtrack for the animated feature Heavy Metal.
Though poor quality dubs from pirate cassettes have made the rounds, Intrada presents the complete Saturn 3 soundtrack from the composer's own recently discovered two-track stereo masters, located via combined efforts of the film studio, the composer's estate, his son Peter Bernstein, Film Score Monthly president Lukas Kendall and Intrada.
The results of this massive combined effort yield the definitive presentation of this powerhouse score in stereo, complete with all the soprano overdubs, percussion overlays and cues deleted from film.
