The Martian Chronicles miniseries was first aired in January 1980 and starred Rock Hudson, Gayle Hunnicutt, Darren McGavin, Roddy McDowall and Joyce Van Patten.

Without giving too much of the plot away, The Martian Chronicles tells the story of three manned probes that are sent to Mars. The first two expeditions end in tradgedy for the Astronaughts. Col. John Wilder (Rock Hudson) leads a third expedition in a bid to discover what went wrong with the previous two and learns that a chicken pox virus brought to Mars by the first two expeditions has almost eradicated the Martian population...

The music for The Martian Chronicles was composed by the English movie composer Stanley Myers. He employed a wide variety of styles to accompany the on-screen action. Whilst mainly an orchestral score, Myers augmented the strings and woodwinds with electronic keyboards and guitar. He also used pan pipes and wood flutes to represent the aliens and their culture.
