Notes
Oh yeah - what an absolute treat this is!
This double CD set contains a selection of Ennio Morricone's gorgeous music from three early 70s Italian TV movies and one theatrical release, all starring famed Italian actress Anna Magnani.
The three TV movies 1943: Un Incontro, La Sciantosa and L'Automobile were broadcast under the banner "Tre Donne" (Three Women) and fourth segment Correva L'Anno Di Grazia 1870 actually got a theatrical release. In France, all four movies were broadcast under the banner "Quatre Femmes".
All four movies were directed by Alfredo Giannetti and the stories feature four different women (each played by Magnani) placed in four different events in Italian history; the First and Second World Wars, The Italian Risorgimento (the political and social process that unified disparate countries of the Italian peninsula into the single nation of Italy between the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century) and the early 1970s.
Originally, only a 45rpm single containing two tracks was released in 1971 and later an LP was released in the USA (and a CD reissue from CAM). This fantastic double CD release was supervised by Morricone himself, who after having access to the all the original master tapes, rejected some of the original LP tracks in favour of some newly discovered takes. The result - a truly wonderful listening experience, containing almost 100 minutes of top notch, highly emotive music from the first three movies and some more examples of the lovely Morricone 70s sound from the fourth!
