Rosenthal draws inspiration from the harrowing drug-smuggling tale and writes a charged, graphic score for orchestra with an edged, angular main theme for brass with aggressive harmonic vocabulary throughout although a brief respite comes with the touching melody "I Ching".

The actual film soundtrack included songs with very sparse scoring but the original MGM masters revealed several cues that had been previously unheard in the final cut of the movie! The 24-track elements were long-since discarded but thankfully MGM retained crisp, clean mono mixes of the complete sessions for mono film production. The Who'll Stop The Rain soundtrack is amongst the composer's most dramatic works and remains one of his own personal favorites.
